The Authoritative Blog on Stamford Connecticut

In the latest news from the “Why doesn’t anything ever get built in Stamford?” File, NRDC has withdrawn its application to expand Lord & Taylor and build a Whole Foods. The Advocate article (http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/ci_9201487) doesn’t give their reasons for doing so (they declined to comment), but it might have been due to the “uproar” over the increase in traffic that a Whole Foods would cause.
Listen people, we live in a dense city where no one carpools and no one takes public transportation. Traffic is not going to get better unless A) people start to carpooltake public transportation or (gasp!) walk, B) they impose rules limiting who can drive on which day (i.e.: odd/even license plates), or C) the zombie holocaust finally happens and everyone dies. Until then, it’s going to take time to travel between certain points in the city. Deal with it!!
The traffic whiners won’t be happy until they make Hope, Bedford, Summer, High Ridge, Long Ridge, Tresser, Broad, Washington, and Main into 8-lane highways.
In other news…
The Antares South End revitalization project, Harbor Point, seems to finally be getting underway. I spotted this activity down on Canal Street:

I think it’s the warehouse where Stamford Paintball used to be, or maybe the rock-climbing place. This massive project is a great example of how cities can reuse and revitalize post-industrial areas that were providing no tax revenue and, in many cases, polluting the environment.

There are also some streets shut down over by Pintey Bowes. I think thats where you’ll see the first actual construction begin.
Re: Whole Food - I blame a certain Advocate letterwriter who also runs a certain chatty blog.
Traffic concerns is what killed the Home Depot proposal at American Cynamid on Rt. 1, so instead we are stuck adding to I-95/Merritt jams to visit the mess that is the HD in Norwalk or traveling across statelines (!) to the nicer, less hectic one in Port Chester. Now there’s a solution for Stamford residents, and a loss of tax dollars.
I’m hoping the South End project does bring in a few big box retailers along with some decent, middle-class housing. That area is a pit and redeveloping has been a long time comin’.
Considering that the South End was the place in Stamford in the Early 1800’s (as I understand it when I was at St. Luke’s Chapel) I would say it is a good thing. Some of the oldest of the homes ( that are now multifamily) were at one time single family estates and there was a picture(drawing) in the St. John’s Episcopal Church of some of that time. that was really nice.
Speaking of traffic, they keep tearing up Elm, Jefferson and Canal lately. I work in Harbor Plaza and it’s a new obstacle course every day! I assume it’s in preparation for the Urban Transitway, but it might just be regular infrastructure maintenance (what an idea!).
Decent middle-class housing in the FC? Sure, right after they build the teleportation terminal and the moon colony.
And who was the Whole Foods-killer?
It’s really frigging hard to walk in a city where “sidewalk” seems to be a four-letter word. In my neighborhood, we don’t even HAVE them. On Hope and Newfield street, when I go running I won’t even use them. they are buckled and pitted, just an ACL tear waiting to happen. I’ll take my chances of getting mowed down on the main road….

funny Mr. Stamford
Manager Mom: I know what you mean. I work at Harbor Plaza (the out-of-place business park down in Shippan), and once you get past Czecsik Marina on Harbor Drive, the sidewalks disappear!
I’d like to walk to work (two miles), but it’s a pain to have to walk through grass and dodge traffic. I’d also have to navigate the Elm Street/95 interchange, which is a nightmare (get it? Ha!). Anybody have any tips on walking from downtown to Shippan without getting flattened?
