The Authoritative Blog on Stamford Connecticut
6 Apr
Since my main source of Stamford news comes from The Stamford Advocate, I was glad to see they just redesigned their web site. Their old site was atrocious and was probably built when the internet was first born. My only complaint about the new site is that they chose one of the most obtrousive ad banners around…the kind that pops up right in front of the home page and forces you to click “close”. Unfortunately pop-up blockers do nothing to prevent these annoying ads. Why spend all this money to build a more user friendly site only to deface it with an ad like that?
My favorite story today from the Advocate? This one about how the wonderful state I live in decides to raise gas taxes even further. I think we already pay more than people in Hawaii.

I somehow managed to miss this article this morning. Good thing or I would have choked on my Cheerios. It’s quite ironic because I literally JUST got so pissed off today by the gas situation in our state that I wasted an hour writing a pointless post on the topic.
More taxes? And on GAS? Are you effing kidding me? I don’t like to appear unladylike but it is time to unleash my favorite insult and call a bunch of tax loving liberal douchebags what they are… tax-loving, liberal, ah, I guess I just did.
Stationstops.com has a post about the new Advocate site as well:

It’s a good blog- even if you don’t commute by train, the author occasionally has articles about Stamford and the FC; I think he is a Stamford resident.
Go Stamford, dominating the FC blogosphere… I think. Not sure if there are Greenwich and Norwalk blogs… I’ll do some research!
Lambira,
I’m not trying to start a political flame war, but considering the fiscal irresponsibility of the current Administration, I think the liberal “tax-and-spend” stereotype has been blown out of the water…
The other issue is that people demand more and more services and benefits from their government (at every level), but the money has to come from somewhere. We can’t have it both ways.
Sure, Europeans pay a buttload in taxes, but they also have great public transportation, universal healthcare, free college and an infrastructure that isn’t on the verge of disintegrating.
I actually completely agree with you. I don’t feel entitled to pay LESS than I already pay (although I wouldn’t turn down the extra money)
But I do think the money we are already paying is grossly mismanaged. Personally, I hate George Bush on every level - I think his social and foreign policies have been disastrous for this country - and I think he has betrayed every possible principle of fiscal conservatism that I was hoping would be the one good thing he’d bring to the table…
Life is weird in an election year for someone like me, who is very socially liberal but a strong fiscal conservative…
Ugh…the mismanagement and waste at every level of government is just infuriating.
As far as your political/economic leanings…man are you out of luck! I’m not a political scholar, but would you say the last fiscally responsible liberal was FDR?
[...] Our hometown paper has a newly redesigned website. If you haven’t visit the website in awhile, it is worth checking out. Some of the new features include the ability to comment on articles, which could lend to a nice community discussion. One the front page are two tabs to view the most viewed and most emailed articles. As a librarian, I am very excited about the search refinement tools, which will help users locate article in the archives. Users can sort by category, name, location and publication date. The Things To Do section will also be helpful in connecting people with event information in Stamford. What is less than fabulous is how ad heavy site now is. The business of newspapers is a bit tricky right now, and I understand that web ads are a large revenue stream. There are some places on the website when I was confused as to what may be an add and what isn’t, like the link to the Real Estate section. Ihave been reading some local blogs, and was tipped off to the new design by Mr. Stamford. Check out his thoughts on the new design at his blog. [...]
