The Authoritative Blog on Stamford Connecticut

I have given Rye Ridge Deli in Stamford four very solid tries and I can now officially state I will never go back.
Rye Ridge Deli, on High Ridge Rd, has an enormous deli and take out selection along with a sit down menu as large as most big diners. No matter what I have eaten there, it always terribly disappoints me. Tonight’s example, a very simple, hard to get wrong, ham and swiss sub for $10!! The bread was stale, there was little meat, and the onions were unsliced. This place is terribly overpriced, a Philly Chessesteak will set you back $13.99!!
Ever eaten a sandwich at from Wawa? Wawa is the upscale 7-Eleven alternative in the Philly area. Their $5 10 inch subs cannot be beat. Please Wawa…expand your business up North and replace these stupid over priced dumps in Stamford!
Where in Stamford can I find great over stuffed sandwiches for lunch?
UPDATE! - Fellow blogger ManagerMom points out that Rye Ridge Deli was shut down briefly by the city for health code violations last year. Also, some friends were coming over to my place last week and brought sandwiches from RRD…once again they disappointed. Its not that they taste bad, its just that for a $10 sandwich you expect that the bread was at least baked this month and that you get loads of meat.

I agree. Rye Ridge Deli is unbelievably terrible. I hear good things about Gionvanni’s Deli, located behind Planet Pizza off Summer. (On Fifth street I think? Or first street?)
C’mon now, if you’re going to eat a sub or sandwich from a convenience store in PA, you have no choice but to travel a bit further west (or north) from Philly and enjoy all the wonders that Sheetz has to offer. Their MTOs simply can’t be beat!
Like my friend Talk, I’ve heard good things about Giovanni’s, but haven’t been. For the record it’s on North St, behind Planet Pizza.
I’ve also heard good things about Rinaldi’s on East Main (by the Firestone).
Maybe I’ll swing by Giovanni’s today so I can have something to say about it!
you obviosuely dont know anything about real new york deli, if you did you wouldn’t be saying what you are saying. rrd is a real deli, unfortunately a redneck like you is comparing real food to crap sold in a convenience store.
Real New York deli’s have great sandwiches over flowing with meat. Rye Ridge serves over priced crap on stale bread.
How exactly am I a red neck?
I am thinking maybe you should go back to Philly because aparently you have no clue as to what a good deli is. Rye Ridge Deli is probably one of the best deli’s around with the largest sandwiches and greatest menu. Anyway…who would eat a sandwich from a dirty convenient store in the first place?
If you have ever been to a Wawa, you would know that their are not dirty. Most Wawa’s are spotless and have long lines to order sandwiches through their automated touch screens.
While Rye Ridge does have a big menu, everything I have ever tried on it sucks. Plus, it is way overpriced for what you get.
Kathryn,
I must insist you re-evaluate RRD. To be honest - it blows.
I have to agree with the anti-RRD group. Not only is it overpriced, but the people behind the counter are rude. I went in there once and asked for egg whites on a bagel, and they looked at me like I ordered an Oldsmobile muffler with a side of broken glass - and then the guy starts to go for a kaiser roll instead of an everything bagel.
I preferred the now-defunct Bull’s Head Bistro. Good food, polite people.
You should go in there on a Saturday afternoon and look at the line out the door and see just how you have no clue as to what a good deli is. Then go to their other store in Rye and look at that line out the door and maybe think about what you are saying. Maybe everyone is crazy…except for you…
Unless Ryan and Kathryn are personally connected to the Rye Ridge Deli, this discussion has gone absolutely nowhere.
Mr. Stamford, JR, and others are well within their rights to believe that there are better local delis than RRD. There probably are.
It’s not some sort of personal attack to not like a restaurant.
It’s time to move on…
I also see long lines at McDonalds…does that make it good?
i doubt you will see a long line to sit down and eat at mc donalds, i am not connected to rye ridge, i just cant stand people who spread negativity about people trying to run a succesful business, i go there quite often, am treated very nicely, enjoy my food, you simply dont know what you are talking about.
Your experience has been different, but that doesn’t mean that Mr. Stamford doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
You don’t think that every single person who walks through the door at RRD has a perfect experience every time, do you?
Ummm…speaking of dirty, you are aware that Rye Ridge Deli was shut down briefly by the city for health code violations last year, right?
i am aware but that was a lot of b.s…any halfway intelligent person can walk in there and see that the place is immaculate. anyway, i guess we’ll just agree to disagree on this.
Dear misguided Ryan
I halfway fear continuing this tread, because you are wrong on many counts and I am sure you will rant about how persecuted RRD is, but they not only were filthy at the time of inspection and had an arrogant attitude, they were selling items that they should not and did not have a permission to do. It is not that all restaurants don’t have problems, most do, but when attitude is added to a problem, the issue is ended with a closure.
hey jk, if they were selling items they weren’t supposed to, then why were they permitted to return to selling those items after a lawyer got involved? and the store was never dirty, attitude I know nothing about, i wasn’t there, but i can tell you that attitude isn’t against the law, abuse of power is, closing someone because u dont like their attitude is not just cause.
i have been to RRD many times and i have always enjoyed it. everyone is entitield to their opinions and mine is FABULOUS!!
As said I thought it would elicit a response, but rather than go through a tedious line by line itemization, I will explain how it works - An inspector goes to a place and they are given a failing score, they have two eeks to fix the problems and looks are deceiving. they come back and if someone has at least tried to fix issues, they give them more time. If no attempt has been made to correct a failing score, a closure results. It works the same way for every restaurant and deli in town. As for the issue with the lawyer - he filed the proper permits to allow the sale of the items, period.
